Anatomy of An Illness As Perceived by the Patient: Reflections on Healing and Regeneration
By Norman Cousins
Norman Cousins's phenomenal bestseller on illness overcome and the triumph of the human spirit. The premise of Norman Cousins's enormously influential work is that the human mind is capable of promoting the body's capacity for combating illness and healing itself even when faced with a seemingly hopeless medical predicament. The author recounts his personal experiences while working in close collaboration with his doctor to overcome a crippling and supposedly irreversible disease, and illustrates the life-saving and ultimately life-prolonging benefits to be gained by taking responsibility for one's own well-being. Cousins's story is inspirational reading for anyone contending with a serious illness. A New York Times bestseller.
Becoming a Healthy Church: 10 Characteristics
By Stephen Maccia
Stephen Macchia moves beyond church growth to offer a fresh perspective on church health. In addition to giving ten characteristics to strive for in pursuing church health, Macchia relates countless stories of churches that exhibit these characteristics. The author has gathered a multitude of experiences from pastors, lay leaders, and parishioners representing survey data from nearly two thousand churches. The results can be applied to churches everywhere, regardless of size, denomination, ethnic diversity, geography, and setting. The book includes end-of-chapter study guides and an appendix and bibliographyperfect for adult Sunday school classes, Bible studies, and lay and ordained church leaders.
Congregation: The Journey Back to Church
By Gary Dorsey
When a skeptical journalist decides to spend a year with one of New England's oldest mainline Protestant congregations, he unintentionally embarks on a strange pilgrimage. Burdened by bad memories of the fundamentalist religion of his southern upbringing, Dorsey begins to attend First Church in Hartford, Connecticut, not so much to learn spiritual truth about God as to explore the mysterious social connections among men and women in a church community. The connections between members of First Church--it turns out--are often tangled and strained by church budgets, pulpit politics, and private visions. But as he traces the connections between church members, Dorsey finds himself a participant in a complex narrative he had intended only to report. Often a narrative of illusion and ill will, of irreverence and farce, it is nonetheless also a narrative of compassion and hope.
The Christian Century
It's difficult to imagine a Christian Century reader who would not cherish Gary Dorsey's book. Part congregational study and part spiritual autobiography, the books reminds us just why it is that people go to church. Named one of The Christian Century's ten "notable books" of 1995.
The Hartford Courant
In this delightful telling of one church's story, Gary Dorsey has identified a way for the national conversation on values to take place on more civil, local grounds.
Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled
"Gary Dorsey has somehow - magically - managed to capture the quietly invisible, mystical interconnectedness of the everyday church. Congregation is a masterpiece of journalism."
The Emotionally Healthy Church: A Strategy for Discipleship that Actually Changes Lifes
By Peter Scazzero with Warren Bird
True Discipleship Integrates Emotional and Spiritual Health.
New Life Fellowship in Queens, New York, had it all: powerful teaching, dynamic ministries, an impressive growth rate, and a vision to do great works for God. Things looked good—but beneath the surface, circumstances were more than just brewing. They were about to boil over, forcing Peter Scazzero to confront needs in his church and himself that went deeper than he’d ever imagined. What he learned about the vital link between emotional health, relational depth, and spiritual maturity can shed new light on painful problems in your own church. Here are refreshing new insights, and a different and challenging slant on what it takes to lead your congregation to wholeness and maturity in Christ.
Sharing from New Life Fellowship’s painful but liberating journey, Scazzero reveals exactly how the truth can and does make people free—not just superficially, but deep down. After offering a new vision of discipleship and a revealing, guided self-assessment of your own spiritual and emotional maturity, The Emotionally Healthy Church takes you through six principles that can make a profound difference in your church. You’ll acquire knowledge and tools that can help you and others
- look beneath the surface of problems
- break the power of past wounds, failures, sins, and circumstances
- live a life of brokenness and vulnerability
- recognize and honor personal limitations and boundaries
- embrace grief and loss
- make incarnation your model to love others.
Written in a personal and passionate style, The Emotionally Healthy Church includes hands-on tools, discussion questions, spotlights on key points, and story after story of people at New Life whose lives have been changed by the concepts in this book. Open these pages, and find out how your church can turn a new corner on the road to spiritual maturity.
"I Come Away Stronger" How Small Groups Are Shaping American Religion
Edited by Robert Wuthnow
In many contemporary churches, the advent of the small faith group has been a phenomenon for the last quarter century. Here, at last, is a series of essays documenting the effects of the small group within the larger denomination. The essays cover everything from Bible studies to single charismatics to campus ministries in a variety of denominational settings. An appendix details the national profile of small groups in churches and acknowledges that those in small groups feel cared for, supported, and encouraged in their faith. Inasmuch as Wuthnow states that this is part of a nationwide trend, those interested in the makeup of American society as well as those who want to document what may be happening in their individual churches are encouraged to read this book. Mary Deeley
Book Description

The Way of the Labyrinth: A Powerful Meditation for Powerful Everyday Life
By Helen Curry
The first time Helen Curry walked a labyrinth she was moved to tears and then "was filled with peace and possibilities." Here, she shares her years of experience with labyrinth meditation and shows how others can find serenity and guidance by adopting this increasingly popular practice. Unlike mazes, which force choices and can create fear and confusion, labyrinths are designed to "embrace" and guide individuals through a calming, meditative walk on a single circular path. The Way of the Labyrinth includes meditations, prayers, questions for enhancing labyrinth walks, guidelines for ceremonies, instructions for finger meditations, and extensive resources. This enchanting, practical, and exquisitely packaged guide helps both novice and experienced readers enjoy the benefits of labyrinth meditation, from problem-solving to stress reduction to personal transformation.
Includes a foreword by Jean Houston, the renowned author and leader in the field of humanistic psychology, who is considered the grandmother of the current labyrinth revival.
